Frequently asked questions
From KOTW Wiki
[edit] What's the object of this game?
The name says it all. You are trying to become the King (or Queen) of the World by being ranked number one in the World. But until you become the head honcho, you must be someone's subject. Everyone in the World serves someone else, except the King (or Queen).
[edit] How is my rank determined?
Your rank is dependent upon how much land you have.
[edit] How often are the ranks updated?
Everyone's ranks, points, and gold are recalculated during the Recalculation period. During this time it will not be possible to initiate any new actions. The person that is ranked number one after the recalculations will be the new King/Queen. The former King/Queen will become his subject.
[edit] What is Barons/Baronesses, Viscount/Viscountess, etc. that I see before everyone's names?
See Title.
[edit] Ok, I've added the application and selected a location for my capital. Now what do I do?
If you go to your page, you will see a list of actions you can take as well as news regarding actions (either initiated by you or by others) with which you are currently involved. As of right now, the following actions are available (more will be added in the future):
- Find new subjects - you can gain new subjects by asking people to pledge allegiance to you. When you ask someone to become your subject, you need to provide the terms of the pledge which include:
- Tribute percentage - the percentage of their daily gold earned that they must give to you.
- Number of days of service before they get your royal standard (optional) - the number of days they must remain loyal to you before you give them your royal standard.
- Remember, in order for someone to pledge allegiance to you they will have to break their allegiance with their current ruler. It makes sense to provide favorable terms for the pledge.
- Find lands to invade - you can take gold, scholars, and battle standards from others by invading their lands and being victorious. When you decide to invade someone else's lands you will have to determine the number of you soldiers to send. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- You are not victorious until all of your opponent's defending soldiers have been eliminated.
- Your soldiers that are away, invading, will not be able to defend your homeland if you are attacked by someone else.
- It takes time for your soldiers to reach the lands they are invading. It also takes time for them to return home after they are victorious or if you order a retreat.
- Soldiers that are defending their homeland tend to fight more ferociously than soldiers that are invading.
- If you are victorious, the amount of gold and the number of scholars that you take from the defeated enemy is directly proportional to the number of your soldiers that are still with the battalion after the battle. There is a limit to the number of gold and soldiers you can take, however, which is based on a percentage of the gold and scholars the defeated enemy has.
- If you are victorious, you will seize one of the enemy's battle standards unless they have already seized one of yours. In that case, you will take back your battle standard.
- If you are defeated, your enemy will be able to salvage the equipment from your fallen soldiers and sell it for gold.
- Once a citizen's lands have been successfully invaded, the high courts may protect that person from being immediately invaded again. He will be protected for up to 7 days, depending on how many soldiers he lost while defending his lands relative to the total number of soldiers he had at the start of the invasion. In other words, the more diligently he tried to protect his lands with his own soldiers, the longer the protection he will receive.
- Train new soldiers - soldiers are necessary to both defend your land from invasion and to invade the lands of others. It takes time and gold to train new soldiers.
- Educate new scholars - scholars are constantly researching and improving technology that make your people and lands more profitable. Having more scholars means earning more gold each day. It takes time and gold to educate new scholars.
- Build new structures - build structures on your land to strengthen your empire. Each structure serves a different purpose.
[edit] Why does it say I serve ___, a person I don't even know?
Everyone in the game must have a ruler except for the King or Queen. If you joined the game via an invite from a friend, that friend will be your ruler. If not, you will be randomly assigned to someone who is in the top half of the World rankings and who has logged-in within the past 24 hours.
[edit] I was invaded and lost but received no protection. Why is that?
The number of days of protection you receive after being successfully invaded is relative to the ratio of the number of soldiers you lost defending to the number of soldiers you had total at the start of the invasion. In other words, the more of your soldiers you use to defend against the invasion, the more protection you will receive. Thus, if you want to ensure maximum protection after being invaded, you should recall all of your soldiers immediately when the invasion against you begins (there is a bold-faced note in the invasion news item in "Your News" to remind you of this). If you do not recall enough of your soldiers home from invading or defending the lands of others, it is possible to get 0 days of protection.
[edit] How do battle standards work?
Battle standards are banners that soldiers take into combat. Without one, your soldiers will lack the morale to engage their enemy. If you successfully invade another citizen's lands and are the initiator of that invasion, you will seize one of his battle standards unless he has one of yours. In that case, you will take back your battle standard. Every day you will receive 4% of the gold earned by each of the owners of the battle standards you have seized. By the same token, you will be required to pay 4% of your daily gold to each citizen that has seized one of your battle standards. In order to stop this, you must reclaim it by successfully invading their lands. You start with 15 battle standards. If you lose all of them, you will be unable to invade anyone except those citizens that have seized them.
[edit] How do Alliances work?
See Alliance.
[edit] What does it mean when my Alliance has a status of "NotActive"?
See Alliance - Status.
[edit] Why does it take time to complete an action?
See Tick.
[edit] I invaded someone with very few defending soldiers thinking I would quickly win the battle, but for some reason only a handful of soldiers are fighting each tick. What's going on?
King (or Queen) of the World is designed to allow players to be relatively relatively successful even if they only log into the game for 5 minutes, once or twice a day. In order to make this possible, the number of soldiers that battle each tick may be reduced based on the number of defending soldiers, ensuring that the minimum length of the invasion is long enough to allow those involved to log in and take action.
[edit] Some say that they can't see my image and/or that my name shows up as a number. Why is that?
Your image (i.e. profile photo) and name come directly from Facebook and are visible based on your Facebook Search Privacy Settings. In other words, others are only allowed to see your name and image in the game if they are already allowed to see them in Facebook via a search. To make your name (in)visible to others in the game, set your "Search Visibility" to level that you desire. To make your Facebook profile picture (in)visible, (un)check "My profile picture" in the "Search Result Content" section.
[edit] Why have I been given a penalty for harboring a multi-accounter(s) in my Alliance?! I didn't even know he was a cheater!
When you join an Alliance, you are joining a team. Being a part of a team comes with many benefits. But along with those benefits comes a new level of accountability for the actions of your teammates. When a member(s) of your Alliance cheats whether you are aware of it or not, your entire Alliance, including you, benefits from that dishonest activity. The Investigators will take into account the severity of the cheating, how "obvious" the cheating was, and how much your Alliance benefited from the cheating to determine whether or not an Alliance penalty will be given.
The lesson to be learned here is to not let cheaters into your Alliance. Though the Investigators have access to special in-game tools that allow them to track down rules violators, you, as an Alliance member, also have access to something very powerful when it comes to sniffing out cheaters in your own Alliance: common sense. Example: if three of your members say they are brothers and seem to act in unison, but only one of them ever says anything on your Alliance discussion board, you may want to take a closer look at "them".
[edit] What determines the price of my next standard or battle standard?
The price of your next standard or battle standard (i.e. the price of land) is based solely on the amount of land that you have under your control. This includes land that you have seized from others, but does not include land that you have lost to others. In other words, if the prices of your next standard is 10000 gold and then you lose a battle standard to an enemy invasion, the price of your next standard will remain 10000 gold. However, if you seize a battle standard from an enemy in an invasion of your own, the price of your next standard will increase above 10000 gold.
[edit] How do I earn gold?
You earn gold from:
- Your people and lands - you get a fixed amount of gold each day from taxing your people and lands.
- Your scholars - the scholars under your command will help make your people and lands more profitable.
- Royal standards in your collection - for every royal standard in your collection, you earn a fixed amount of gold each day.
- Tributes from your subjects - you will receive a percentage of the daily gold earned by each of your direct subjects. These percentages were determined when they pledged allegiance to you. If your direct subjects also have subjects, you will indirectly get a portion of their gold as well. For example: A is a subject of B. A gives 50% of his gold to B, every day. B is a subject of C. B gives 40% of his gold (which includes the gold he got from A) to C, every day. This continues all the way up the ladder. As you can see, having a lot of subjects really pays off.
- Invading the lands of others - if you successfully invade someone else's lands, your soldiers will take some of their gold, scholars, and a battle standard as spoils.
- Defending your lands from others - if you successfully defend your lands from an invasion, you will be able to salvage the equipment from enemy's fallen soldiers sell it for gold.
- Purchase gold - gold can be purchased from the Buy Upgrades page.
[edit] How do I earn honor credits?
You earn honor credits from:
- Being active - you can earn one credit every day by simply visiting your page.
- Writing a Royal Decree - you can earn 5 credits by writing a Royal Decree.
- Chatting - you can earn up to one credit a day for chatting at least 60 minutes. Once you start chatting, a "Total chat time" notice will appear on your page next to your honor credit total, indicating how many minutes you've chatted, thus far. That notice will be replaced by "+1 for chat" once you have earned the credit. It will be added to your total during the next recalculation period. Your time will carry over to the next day if you do not reach 60 minutes in a single day. Each new day begins at today's recalculation period and ends at tomorrow's.
- Performing tasks - you can earn honor credits by performing Tasks for Past Kings or Tasks for Past Queens.
[edit] Why can't I perform any more tasks for honor credits?
In order to maintain balance in the world (i.e. prevent some citizens from getting too far ahead of others), the high courts may temporarily make tasks unavailable to you once you have earned a certain number of honor credits via Tasks for Past Kings or Tasks for Past Queens. They will, eventually, be made available to you again once the rest of the world has had a chance to "catch up".
[edit] I completed one of the "Earn Honor Credits" offers but haven't received my honor credits. What's going on?
The systems for buying/earning honor credits (i.e. Tasks for Past Kings/Queens) are controlled and managed by 3rd parties. Please keep in mind that it may take some time (days or even weeks depending on the offer) before the 3rd parties will credit you your honor credits because they must wait for confirmation that you have completed the task (a.k.a offer) from their partners. Here’s an example: if you purchase a magazine subscription via Tasks for Past Kings,
- the partner in charge of the magazine subscription must wait for your credit card purchase to clear,
- the partner will then contact the 3rd party (i.e. the people behind Tasks for Past Kings),
- the 3rd party will in turn give you your honor credits in King (or Queen) of the World.
Please use the green "View Offer Status" button on the page that you used (either the Tasks for Past Kings or Tasks for Past Queens page) to view the current status of the offer that you filled out to earn your honor credits. If you do not see a status for the offer that you filled out, click on the "Missing honor credits" link on the page, and their customer service representatives will be able to help you. Keep in mind that they may not respond until a sufficient amount of time has passed in order to give their partners a chance to send confirmation that you have completed the offer.
[edit] How can I add King (or Queen) of the World to my Facebook profile?
You can add the game to your Facebook profile as an application tab. Doing this will display an abridged version of your KOTW page (i.e. "Quick Page") to you and your friends as well as providing an easy way to jump to your full page. To add the tab, do the following:
- Go to your Facebook profile.
- Near the top of the page, directly below your name, you will see a row of your current tabs (e.g. Wall, Info, Photos, etc.). At the right end of this row, there is a "+" that allows you to add a new tab. Click it.
- At the bottom of the popup menu that appears, you will see a search box. Type in "King (or Queen) of the World". When the full application name appears below your typing, click it.
- You’re done! You should now see a "KOTW" tab on your your Facebook profile.
[edit] What is your policy when it comes to people who are cheating by creating multiple accounts?
We have a no-tolerance policy when it comes to cheaters. They ruin the game for everyone else, and they will be banned. We realize that there is no way to be certain if someone is cheating, so we will use common sense to make that determination. Cheating includes, but is not limited to:
- Creating multiple accounts.
- Tolerating or encouraging others who have created multiple accounts.
- Logging into another user's account.
- Using a bot.
- Exploiting any limitation or loophole in the game.
If you wish to report a user who you believe is cheating, you may do so by messaging any of the Official investigators.
[edit] How are distances calculated?
Distances are calculated using the Haversine formula.
[edit] I no longer want to play. How do I delete my profile from the game?
Being inactive in the game for 60 consecutive days will result in the automatic deletion all your game data. If your concern is your name and photo remaining in the game, please note that the game never saves any personal information about you.
